The Issue of a Team Name
by Susan Steffen-Kraft
What names and things mean now are different then back then. As an example, gay use to mean happy but now if you were to say you were gay; well you know what people would think!
In 1933, co-owner George Preston Marshall changed the name to the Redskins, possibly in recognition of the then–head coach Lone Star Dietz, who claimed to be part Sioux. Dietz's true heritage has been questioned by some scholars". From Wikipedia
However this is a franchise that has been mired in a long legal battle let alone a public one over it's name and mascot. Many Native Americans consider the "r-word" as racist and derogatory. In short equal to the "n-word" among African Americans.
Ah, but it is used with a team and not against an individual or the Native Americans themselves. The owner is risking millions in a legal battle while people are rolling their eyes at him and at his attitude. Ask yourself if it is worth it and remember it is his team and a free country!
"The local chiefs of the Patawomeck and Pamunkey in Virginia who said they weren’t offended were ignored. Robert Green, the former chief of the Patawomeck, said that he was a Redskins fan and would be offended if the team did change its name. Then he added that the Redskins name came from the Indians and that the country had become too politically correct". From the Front Page Mag
Indeed he would be right! I do not like bullies or mean people. I deplore people calling each other vile and cruel names. And do not get me started on kids picking and bullying other kids. However we have to draw the line somewhere or lawsuits would be on going if someone told you they did not like your Red hair and called you Four Eyes because you wore glasses. We cannot sue over every little thing.
I think picking on someone is deplorable but this is a big group (team) and I for one do not even think of the name per-say when watching the Redskins play football. I simply like football. Besides I am a Seahawks fan so thus perhaps I am a little less concerned about the name of the Redskins team.
"Some believe that the name is honoring the achievements and virtues of Native Americans, and that it is not intended in a negative manner. Former Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke said "I admire the Redskins name. I think it stands for bravery, courage, and a stalwart spirit and I see no reason why we shouldn't continue to use it." These differing opinions have led to controversy, protests and legislative action".
Each to his own opinion. I am sure Mr. Cooke may truly believe that but he is slightly delusional in his thinking.
Of course the white liberal sportswriters who are screaming about the issue of the Redskins name really have no interest in Native Americans and their problems.
They care only about their politically correct crusades and not about the fact that controlling language is about controlling people. This battle is not really about the Redskins name, it is about power and control. The Indians do not realize that they themselves are being used and exploited by the sportswriters and the politicians who are championing their cause.
In fact we do not see Cowboys getting upset by a team being named after them. Sometimes the way the Cowboys play they probably should. Uh Oh! Now I will be in trouble with Cowboy fans! But surely you get my drift. Consider the Kansas City Chiefs. I would think all Chiefs anywhere should be upset.
Eagles everywhere should be riled over Michael Vick the quarterback who killed dogs. Maybe they are glad it was a Dog and not an Eagle. And as for the New York Yankees, some people from that area might not like being called a Yankee. I am trying to inject a bit of humor into this but maybe I am not succeeding! Ah Well, we could go on and on but time to move on to our politicians.
It seems our Congress is getting involved when we have other much more imperative problems to solve. They tend to stick their nose in everything apparently. So why is Congress and the President and everyone else jumping on this bandwagon. Are they not more important issues to deal with in this country?
I am paying Congress to deal with this! They should do this for free and on their own free time. It is sports for goodness sake! The Indians can sue privately or talk to the owner or whatever they choose. The Commissioner of Football can also put his two cents in and deal with it privately just as the military does in their own courts.
And Bob Costas the sports announcer can go fly a kite. He seems to always stick his nose in and have an opinion on every sports issue. Granted that the first owner of the Redskins was racist and Snyder the current principal owner is a bit of a jerk but the name has been around forever and thus I say Let it Go! This I get hurt feelings over every little thing and sue and complain has got to stop but as long as there lawyers and people who want to control we are stuck.
I say Pull up your Big Girl Panties for the ladies and Take it Like a Man for the men. And from this point on do not name a team after anyone but an animal who can't complain and not a person or persons who will. Live and Learn!
The most ardent defenders of identity politics and supposed enemies of racism — who I might add are liberal have "never shied away from occupying the owner’s box during home games. Over the years, such liberals as Tip O’Neill, Jack Valenti, Joe Califano, Ed Muskie, Douglas Wilder, Earl Warren, Stewart Udall, George McGovern, Tom Clark, Eugene McCarthy, Al Gore, Warren Magnuson, Stuart Symington, Byron White, and others enjoyed the team’s hospitality.
Even Ethel Kennedy accepted eight tickets from the team for her family. If the name disparaged and denigrated Native Americans, its obviousness was lost on the team’s liberal guests — or they ignored it. Dan Snyder’s box is more likely to be filled with TV jounalists than politicians". From Jack Schaffer
So now, I see hypocrisy everywhere. If it is truly wrong why were so many at these games and taking freebies and enjoying all the benefits offered? Again I see hypocrisy everywhere. If I were the owner I would never give anyone else any and I mean any gifts, freebies, and so forth. No fringe benefits at all. He is not obligated too. Beware of Wolves in Sheep's clothing! And No Honor Amongst Thieves.
Many are hanging on just for the benefits but will turn on you for publicity and to get their name in the news. Then when you have given in....voila, they are your friends again. Well Screw You is what I would say to them.
So many bigger and better issues I could write on but this seemed to be something I needed to get off my chest.
Looking for a name change. Someone suggested the Washington Senators. OMG! No No and No! Considering what our Senate is like I would not name any team after our Senate.
I have no thoughts on a different name for them nor do I care. But that name if it is brought up, needs to be quashed!
My rant on this is over and I will hopefully not have to hear about this nonsense again but alas, I fear that we will keep hearing about it until we all want to scream and throw something at the TV.
