Thanksgiving Eve I went out to eat at the local Red Robin. About four hours after my dinner I was dealing with a case of the dry heaves for about two hours. I was also dealing with a case of the shakes such as one would have when experiencing extreme cold or the D.T.'s although I was suffering from neither. All of this was combined with a case of a twitching in my right hand which looked very much like cerebral palsy or Parkinson's disease. Needless to say I was quite concerned. Finally after about two hours of dry heaves I threw up. I felt considerably better after that. I took a hot shower and went to bed praying that this was only a case of food poisoning. Being that I don't have health insurance praying that this was a minor episode and would pass in due course seemed prudent. Little did I know what was in store for me.
Thanksgiving Day passed uneventfully. I felt fine. My health care shitstorm was to come Friday. I felt fine Friday until about 2:00 P.M. when all these symptoms started manifesting themselves again. I felt like nine miles of bad road. It was time to bite the bullet and go to the hospital the financial consequences be damned !!! Off I went to the local urgent care facility. To say that the Doctors there were highly concerned about my condition would be an understatement of epic proportions. I was told that had I not come in right when I did I would have been dead by morning. I had picked up a urinary tract infection which apparently had dehydrated me to an extremely dangerous point. My blood pressure at that point was 93 / 60 . The Grim Reaper was circling my bed. The end was near. The Doctors stabilized me and put me in an ambulance to take me to St. Luke's Hospital in Boise , Idaho.
My healthcare adventure was just beginning.
After five Hellish days in the I.C.U. and four in the regular ward I became coherent enough for the Doctors to tell me the rest of my health care story the vast majority of which came as a total shock to me. I found out that I was diabetic and that I only had one kidney.I also had some benign nodules on my lung , a benign mass on my kidney and pneumonia. I was totally amazed that I could have a physical before I went to China , a physical every one of the twelve years while I was in China and a physical before I came home to America and nobody picked any of it up until I got dangerously sick and was at Death's Door in Saint Luke's Hospital in Boise , Idaho U.S.A. God Bless St. Luke's Hospital's very highly skilled and extremely professional staff. Were it not for them and Dr's. Nunnly and Johnson I would be dead today. Yes yes I'm aware that some of you were no doubt rooting for The Grim Reaper. I must confess that I'm not sorry I disappointed you. In any case $ 25,000 and nine days later I'm resting comfortably at home with a renewed sense of just how fragile and precious life really is.
1. If you don't know whether you have diabetes get checked. If you can't afford it find a free clinic or some other way. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in America. Diabetes is also a prime contributor to many other diseases such as heart disease , kidney disease , cardiovascular disease , and blindness to name but a few. Get yourselves checked out if you don't know whether you're diabetic and do NOT accept any health care institution's refusal to chek you for this. If it's any help to you there are many free diabetic clinics that will test you for diabetes for free. Many pharmaceutical companies will also have free clinics that will do this as well as provide you with free or substantially reduced cost for insulin and other diabetic supplies. GET IT DONE !!! Don't wait for what happened to me to happen to you.
2. If you need to go to the hospital then GO !!! Do NOT worry about the financial considerations. As the Dr. at Saint Luke's himself told me " There is only ONE of you. Now is not the time to be worrying about the cost of anything. In any case Saint Luke's will work with you financially to pay the bill. " Friends in the vast majority of states no hospital can refuse you when you're in a life threatening situation such as I was . All you are required to do is pay SOME amount every month. That can be as little as $ 5.00 a month.
