Dear Friends :
This is D.D. Lumix speaking. One of the absolute best perks of my job is that my boss Spaced Teacher gets at least 14 weeks of paid vacation off every year which enables her to travel in China extensively. When ever she travels she always takes me and my cousin , Cam Corder. We are currently on Winter Break of 14 paid weeks off. All over Manchuria right now there are Ice And Snow Festivals going on. This past week S.T. decided to hop on a train and go check out The Changchun Snow Festival which was taking place in the Jingyuetan National Forrest this year. The slide shows below are of that festival. I hope you enjoy them.
For any of you that may find yourselves in Changchun and would like to see this festival some very good advice on how to do that will follow. I suggest that you enter Jingyue Park at the West Gate. The snow sculptures are at the base of Vasalopott Hill which is the public ski area in this park. That will be about a 2-3 mile walk from the gate. When you get to Vasalopott Hill look at the lake and diagonally to your right you will see a snow castle. That is where the snow sculptures are. Be advised that I'm unaware of whether or not they will let a taxi take you right to Vasaloppot Hill or if they will let you drive your car into the park. I would suggest that you walk since you will get a beautiful view of the park itself and some great photos. Dress warmly though since it will be Siberian Winter cold. Also do not stray from the road since this is not a place you want to get lost in. I also suggest that you visit between 10:00 A.M. and 2:00 P.M. when the Winter sun is at it's warmest. Admission price at the time I went was 30 RMB or about $ 5.00. If you take a taxi from downtown Changchun it will cost you between 40 - 50 RMB depending upon exactly where you are downtown. If you take a taxi from the Jingyue are it should cost you between 10 - 20 RMB again depending upon exactly where you are in the Jingyue District. Also be advised that Shenyang and Harbin which both have far superior Snow And Ice Festivals are only a two and three hour ride respectively from Changchun on the bullet train. Harbin's Snow And Ice Lantern Festival is world famous. The Changchun Snow Festival would be a good one or two day side excursion from either of those cities. There are a few other things of interest in Changchun such as Nanhou Park , The Sculpture park and The Movie Theme Park. They also have the Spring Flower show in March and the auto show twice a year.
Have fun at any and all of them should you ever find yourself in this neck of the woods.
