Could somebody please explain to me how The Canadian Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team can be viewed as dominant. They barely beat Latvia 2 - 1 who isn't even ranked in the top ten in the world and has only two NHL players one of whom is 41 years old by scoring a goal in the final 3 minutes , they only beat the U.S.A. 1 - O thanks to what I will concede is a great smothering team defense. In the final game they beat Sweden who didn't have four of their best players due to injury one of whom is probably the second best player in the world. For the final game 3 out of 4 of the on ice officials were Canadian and the fourth was an American who lives in Calgary. All of the off ice officials were Canadian. I'll freely admit that I didn't see any blown or bad calls but that is not the point. Can you honestly say that if you were the Swedes you wouldn't be concerned about these facts? Also in the final game Sweden's best center was declared ineligible for using a banned substance two hours before the game. The Olympic officials admitted themselves that this was NOT a case of doping but rather a case of a player and team getting caught in what was a minor technicality at best. This substance is not banned by the NHL. Nicklas Backstrom the player in question has an excellent reputation in this regard according to all reports I've read but thanks to some overzealous Olympic officials all that will be remembered by the vast majority of people is that he was banned from the Olympic Gold Medal game for doping. As far as I'm concerned Canada's Men's Olympic Hockey Team's Gold Medal is tarnished forever by this fact. Now I'm sure that most Canadians will view my observations as a case of sour grapes and that's fine I'm a big boy I can handle that. It is after all much easier to claim sour grapes in spite of the facts than it is to take a good long hard look at how you won your Gold Medal. My guess is that the folks in Sweden and Latvia among other nations would agree that I have some valid points. Canada claiming world dominance in hockey based upon the results of this tournament is ludicrous. It would be akin to Alabama beating LSU by a safety in the college football championships and claiming dominance over college football for the next four years. It's ridiculous at face value by any honest observer. This Canadian Olympic Hockey Team is neither dominant or the best team ever assembled. The great Red Army teams of the past would eat them for lunch. The truth of the matter folks is that The Canadian Olympic Hockey Team is low hanging fruit ripe for the picking. They can be beat by any of the top 10 teams and even Latvia proved how beatable Canada really is. The other teams will be ready for them next time. I hope there will be none of the extenuating circumstances then that protected Canada this time. Whoever wins the next time I do not want the Gold Medal tarnished by any of the foolishness so prevalent this time around. I know that Sweden wants a piece of Canada as do all the top hockey playing countries. Let's hope everybody gets a fair shake next time.
Sweden the deck was stacked against you this time. I hope next time you'll get your justice.
